SCIENTIFIC ARTICLE Knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding patient safety among surgical trainees in Sri Lanka

IntroductionSurgical trainees play an integral role in the perioperative workup and safety of patients undergoing surgery. This study was aimed to assess surgical trainees’ knowledge, attitudes practices on patient safety. MethodsA descriptive cross-sectional among 105 (males 96%, mean age 33 years, range 30-40 years) performed using self-administered validated questionnaires (Safety Attitude Questionnaire-SAQ) (Questionnaire evidence-based reporting medical errors). Responses were marked a 5-point Likert scale analysed.ResultsApproximately two thirds (n=72, 69%) junior registrars rest (n=33, 31%) senior registrars. The median knowledge score 60 (range 10-90). Median SAQ 74 (151/205, 57-95). Approximately 65% (n=68) claimed they aware protocols marking site. Nearly three quarters (n=78, 74%) have read WHO safe surgery guidelines. Eighty-seven participants (84%) had not attended formal risk management course/ teaching activity. Only 53% (n=56) believed that errors handled appropriately less than third (31%, n=33) work environment favourable discuss errors. 54% (n=57) received appropriate feedback about their performances. ConclusionOverall, culture found be suboptimal. Formal sessions, workshops local guidelines may help improve trainees. Furthermore, working conditions need improved encourage discussion allow frequent feedback.
